If they can erect a statue to Rocky Balboa in Philadelphia, certainly they can build one for John Simpson in McDonald, PA.

Stallone's iconic boxer is a champion in the ring, but when it comes to haircolor, Simpson's work is a TKO. That's probably why he carried the prize for Haircolorist of the Year home from the North American Hairstyling Awards in Las Vegas this year. His brilliant interpretation of the blonde/brunette/redhead triumvirate, along with his jaw-dropping, "how did he do that?" execution left the judges, and indeed everyone who saw the collection, in a state of awe and admiration. I think that photo work is an amazing avenue. It makes you really think about what direction your work is taking. You find yourself doing the same thing over and over with your clients and this breaks you out of your routine. Routine is the enemy of creativity so for me it ignites my "spark".

NAHA has been a goal I focused on the last few years and have been lucky to be a finalist both years. Find a great photographer who knows how to shoot hair and just go for it. Even if your images don't make it, you have something you can submit to industry magazines and something you can use to brand yourself.

Who knows maybe one year I'll take the prize but so far I have had my work published numerous times, that's been a great reward!

Shooting for NAHA has been one of the most exciting things I have done in my career. From inspiration to final photos the process is challenging, motivating, at times frustrating but definitely the most fun I have had.

The most important thing I have learned from my experience with photo shoots, is that you assemble the best team you can and let everyone do their job. If your concept is clear and everyone is on the same page the results are incredible.

To be a finalist in NAHA and be in the company of friends, colleges, and industry giants at the awards ceremony is an amazing accomplishment.
